Image Pixelator

Pixelate any image instantly. Adjust block size to create a mosaic effect. Perfect for privacy, artistic edits, and creative projects.

How it works: The image is divided into blocks (pixels) of equal size. Each block is filled with the average color of that region, creating a mosaic effect. Larger block size = more pixelated.

Supported formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP. Max size 10MB.
Small values (2-5) give subtle pixelation; larger values (10-40) create a bold mosaic.

Understanding Image Pixelation

Pixelation is an effect where an image is displayed with large, visible blocks (pixels). It reduces the image's resolution while preserving the overall color distribution, creating a mosaic or "digital" look.

How Pixelation Works:

The image is divided into a grid of blocks (size N×N). For each block, the average color of all pixels in that block is calculated, and the entire block is filled with that color. This process reduces detail and creates a stylized effect.

Common Uses

1

Privacy Protection: Pixelate faces, license plates, or sensitive information in photos before sharing online.

2

Artistic Effects: Create retro-style pixel art or mosaic effects for creative projects.

3

Data Visualization: Simplify complex images to highlight color patterns or reduce visual clutter.

4

Social Media: Create eye-catching thumbnails or profile pictures with a unique pixelated style.

Pixelation vs. Blurring

Both techniques are used to obscure details, but they work differently:

  • Pixelation: Creates a blocky effect by averaging colors in square regions. Results in a sharp-edged mosaic.
  • Blurring: Smooths out details by mixing neighboring pixels, creating a soft, out-of-focus effect.

Pixelation is often preferred for creating a retro digital aesthetic, while blurring is used for subtle obfuscation.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, all processing is done entirely in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server. This ensures your privacy and security.

The tool can handle images up to 10MB. For larger images, processing may be slower. We recommend using images under 4000x4000 pixels for optimal performance. When Fast Mode is enabled, large images are automatically scaled down to 2000px or less.

Currently, this tool applies pixelation to the entire image. For selective pixelation, you would need an image editor with selection tools. We may add a region selection feature in the future.

The pixelated image is downloaded as a PNG file. PNG is a lossless format that preserves the sharp edges of the pixelation effect.

Larger pixel blocks mean fewer blocks overall, so each block represents a larger area of the original image. This reduces the level of detail, creating a more abstract, mosaic-like appearance. It's the intended effect of pixelation.
