The parent hydrocarbon chain is the longest continuous carbon chain in the molecule. Number the chain to give the substituents the lowest possible numbers.
Substituents are atoms or groups of atoms that replace hydrogen atoms on the parent chain. Name them according to their identity and position.
Number the carbon atoms in the parent chain starting from the end that gives the substituents the lowest numbers. If there's a tie, prioritize the first point of difference.
List the substituents in alphabetical order (ignoring prefixes like di-, tri-). Use hyphens to separate numbers from letters, and commas to separate numbers.
Functional groups determine the suffix of the compound name. The highest priority functional group becomes the suffix, while others become prefixes.
