Total units attempted: 0
Total grade points (unweighted): 0.00
Honors points earned (raw, eligible only): 0.00
Honors points applied (capped ≤8): 0.00
Grade point scale: A+ / A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0.
Honors weight: AP, IB, and UC-transferable honors courses receive +1.0 grade point per unit (per semester course), capped at 8 total added points. Important: Only grades of C- or higher qualify for honors extra points. If a course is marked "Honors/AP/IB" but the grade is below C-, no honors points are added.

Understanding UC GPA: Official Calculation for University of California

The University of California uses a unique GPA calculation for freshman and transfer applicants. It focuses on a‑g courses completed in grades 9–11 (plus summer after 9th). Weighted GPA grants extra points for UC-certified honors, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and certain college courses. However, UC imposes a cap of 8 honors points (semester units) to maintain fairness across schools with different numbers of honors offerings.

Formulas used by this calculator:

? Unweighted GPA = Σ (grade_points × units) / Σ units

? Weighted Uncapped GPA = [ Σ (grade_points × units) + Σ (eligible_honors_extra_points) ] / Σ units

? Weighted Capped GPA (UC official) = [ Σ (grade_points × units) + min(Σ eligible_honors_extra_points, 8) ] / Σ units

Each eligible honors course (grade C- or higher) adds extra 1 point per unit (e.g., 3‑unit AP course with a B adds 3 extra points). Courses with grade D+ to F receive NO honors weight.

Why UC GPA Matters for Admissions

UC schools (UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, etc.) rely heavily on GPA as an academic indicator. The “capped weighted GPA” is used for eligibility in the statewide index (ELC) and for many campus selection processes. A strong UC GPA (typically 4.0+ weighted) makes applicants competitive, especially for impacted majors like engineering, computer science, and business. The calculator here follows UC’s official guidelines as published by the UC Office of the President. It does not include 12th grade grades, but you can still model projected courses.

Real Student Scenario: Sophia’s UC GPA

Sophia completed 24 semester units (8 courses) in grades 10–11: 5 regular courses (A, A-, B+, B, A) and 3 AP courses (each 4 units, grades: A, B+, A). Raw grade points total = 88.2. Raw honors points = 12 (3 APs × 4 units each). Capped honors = 8. Therefore capped weighted GPA = (88.2 + 8)/24 = 4.008. Uncapped = (88.2+12)/24 = 4.175. UC uses capped version for official ranking. This calculator replicates that.

Step‑by‑Step Guide to Using This Tool

  1. Add each completed a‑g course from 9th to 11th grade (including summer sessions).
  2. Select the letter grade exactly as on transcript (A+, A, A-, B+, etc.).
  3. Enter course units (semester units; use the Q→S button if you have quarter units).
  4. Check “Honors / AP / IB” if the course receives UC honors weighting (refer to your school’s UC-approved course list). Note: Only grades of C- or higher will earn extra honors points. If your grade is below C-, the checkmark will not add points and a warning icon will appear.
  5. Add as many courses as needed using the Add Course button.
  6. Your UC GPAs update instantly — unweighted, weighted uncapped, and capped official GPA.
Reference: Standard Grade Points (UC scale including A+)
A+ / A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1.0
D- = 0.7
F = 0.0
Grades of P (Pass) or NP (No Pass) are not included in GPA calculation per UC policy.

Honors Weighting Rules & Limitations

Only courses designated as UC-approved honors level (including AP, IB, and transferable college courses) are eligible for extra grade points. For each semester unit in such a course, +1.0 point is added to the total grade points provided the grade is C- or higher. However, UC caps the total honors points at 8.0 for the weighted GPA calculation used in admission eligibility. Our calculator clearly shows raw eligible honors points and capped applied points so you can see if you exceed the limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only “a‑g” courses (subject requirements) completed with letter grades from 9th grade through 11th grade. PE, ROTC, non-academic electives generally do not count. Also, summer after 9th grade counts as 10th grade.

Yes, UC uses the plus/minus system: A+ is still 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, etc. This calculator respects the complete UC scale including A+.

UC caps the extra points at 8. Any additional honors points do not raise your official capped weighted GPA. However, your uncapped weighted GPA (for internal school reports) may be higher.

Transfer applicants need to calculate their junior-level GPA based on UC-transferable courses. This tool works similarly; just include only transferable college units with grades C or better.

For UCLA/UC Berkeley, admitted middle 50% weighted GPA is typically 4.15–4.30 (capped). For UC Irvine/UC Davis, around 4.00–4.25. Unweighted GPAs around 3.85+ are common. Use this calculator to see where you stand.

No. UC rules require a grade of C- or higher to receive honors weighting. This calculator follows that rule: if your grade is below C-, the honors checkbox will NOT add extra points, and you'll see a warning icon next to the checkbox.
